International Research Project
On the 28th of August 2014, the first of six, installation webinar within the international research project "Project on Sharing Best Practices for Human Health Research in Communities Affected by Ecological Damage in Russia and the USA: A Peer-to-Peer Dialogue Engaging Scientists, Civil Society Organizations, and Affected Community Residents"- Short Name,"Health Risk Research Dialogue" was held . In the webinar the following participants have taken part:
- From the Russian side - Buryat Center for Public Environmental Expertise (Ulan-Ude), Directorate of Rospotrebnadzor for the Buryat Republic (Ulan-Ude), the Federal Scientific Center for Medical and Preventive Health Risk Management Technologies (Perm);
- From the American side - Southwest Research and Information Center (Albuquerque, NM).
Webinar participants discussed the results of three studies, carried out by the scientists from the University of New Mexico Health Science Center College of Pharmacy, devoted to problems of the impact of mining activities on the health of the Indians Navaho. The great attention of participants was attracted by the report made by the Deputy Director for Science Irina V. May dedicated to scientific problems of justification of the fact of harm to public health in the presence of an unacceptable risk to health in the ambient environment. It was decided to discuss in details the issues of justification the correlation of health problems of the population living in Zakamensk (Buryatia) with the factors of ambient environment caused by waste from Dzhidinsky tungsten-molybdene works.
